Summer Plans

Until I have more time to post something substantial, I'll post my summer plans.

-Work at Rita's water ice.
This will pay for dining at nice restaurants, cooking equipment, part of my car-insurance (If I pass the test I'll have my license in a week), and really not much else. I'll save the bank account for later.

There's so much to gain from reading, and I've found that I really enjoy it. I plan to read Heat, Omnivore's Dilemma, and anything else I can find in the Borders food section that catches my eye.

-SAT tutor
I just want to take the SAT's as early as possible then get them out of the way.

-Drive to the Beach
I doubt I'll go much, but I wanna take road trips to the beach with friends as often as possible.

-Grill and Chill
Whenever anyone asks me what I'm doing this summer, I tell them "grillin and chillin." I really overuse that phrase. Anyway, I wanna have some legitimately good barbeques. BBQ's with just burgers and dogs are rightfully a part of summer, but I wanna make mine more than that. I wanna cook pulled pork and brisket and duck.

-Update blog more
With all the grillin I'll be doing, and all the free time I'll have, I'll update more substantially and frequently. I hope.

-Watch the 20+ Good Eats episodes I've recorded but haven't been able to watch lately cause I've been doing so busy.

And that's my summer in a nutshell.

Good Eats you say.
In the last week I've watched maybe 5 seasons on youtube
Just search it. You'll find like every episode.

Sounds like a great summer to me!
Love AB, and especially anything he does on herbs, spices, and condiments - a fresh look at old ingredients.

I think you're gonna love "Heat"! Culinary literature is my new favorite genre; as much bad or mediocre stuff there is out there, the good stuff is such a joy to read. When you make your way out here to SF, be sure to go to Omnivore Books on Food - the perfect, bright little bookshop. And the only book store I've ever been to that sells pastured eggs.

I am in the middle of reading "Heat" and think you will love Buford's adventures and literary style. You should head to the Jersey shore for "Boardwalk Food". Wildwood is a virtual Junk Food Mecca and there are a few diamonds to be found in the coal heap. Are you still staging anywhere?

Hey! Nice to see that there are other teenagers who are just as interested in food as I am! I'm seventeen. :) I just discovered your blog, and I'm looking forward to reading it!

Your summer reading plan inspired me to cut and past the Food category of my reading list for you. Hope it whets your literary appetite. : )

Food:

Spiced: A Pastry Chef's True Stories of Trials by Fire, After-Hours Exploits, and What Really Goes on in the Kitchen - Dalia Jurgensen

Dirty Sugar Cookies: Culinary Observations, Questionable Taste - Ayun Halliday

Urban Italian: Simple Recipes and True Stories from a Life in Food - Andrew Carmellini

I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti - Giulia Melucci

Heat: An Amateur's Adventures as Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta-Maker, and Apprentice to a Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany (Vintage) - Bill Buford

Wichcraft - Tom Colicchio

I recently finished "The Nasty Bits" by Anthony Bourdain and really enjoyed it as well.

(As you can see, I have yet to read Heat myself.)

Be sure to check out Culinary artistry and the Flavor Bible as well. They aren't really books to read but much more of a reference (like you might use McGee). A quick search on amazon should turn both of them up.

If you are interested in pizza at all be sure to look up American Pie. It's about a baker that travels all over the world checking out pizza. The second half of the book is all technique and recipe.

Did you pass your driving test?

Have you read "Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant"? It is a great mix of food lit short stories. I recommend it if you haven't read it yet.
